no sound on older dm48?

I plug it into my ipad, using heavy brass app like always, and I get nothing.  The sound seems to work on the ipad as I can use the keyboard at the bottom of the app screen, and one point a signal was going through but without sound (I could see the keyboard notes light up).  Any suggestions about what to do or try?  Everything seems to be plugged in correctly - I've used this a lot but not recently.
