Pedestrian Enforcement Campaign in McLean District

Officers from the McLean District will be conducting a pedestrian education and enforcement campaign beginning April 28th in order to prevent injuries and deaths due to pedestrian crashes.
Throughout the campaign, message boards will be placed on Lee Highway, Arlington Boulevard and Gallows Road featuring pedestrian safety messages. Crime prevention officers will work with neighborhood civic associations to distribute safety information to their residents. Posters with safety tips will be placed around the community in schools and local businesses. Officers will conduct enforcement and education efforts at various locations along Lee Highway, Arlington Boulevard, and Gallows Road throughout the two week-long period, ending May 11.
Additionally, Fairfax County Police Department members will attend and present information at a regional workshop on the topic of pedestrian safety in Washington, DC on Tuesday, April 29 at the National Press Club. The workshop, dubbed “It’s Time for Solutions” will look at law enforcement initiatives, media response to pedestrian incidents, engineering issues and other elements that make up walkable communities.
Pedestrian safety is a high priority in Fairfax County. Fairfax Police urge the public to:
·        Cross the street at marked crosswalks and intersections.
·        Before crossing, look left, right, then left again.
·        Use pedestrian pushbuttons.
·        Begin crossing the street on “Walk” signal.
·        Stay visible after dark and in bad weather.
·        Watch out for trucks and buses backing out of parking spaces and driveways.
