Dear Colleagues,

The Metadata Futures Task Force—convened by Core (a division of the American Library Association) and the International Coalition of Library Consortia (ICOLC)—invites you to participate in a survey on current metadata sharing and reuse practices across libraries and consortia.

This survey is part of a broader effort to develop community-informed guidelines that support equitable, transparent, and sustainable approaches to metadata governance. Your responses will help us understand the systems, policies, technologies, and vendor relationships shaping metadata workflows today.

We welcome responses from anyone involved in cataloging, metadata, discovery, systems, digital repositories, vendor negotiations, or related areas. Multiple individuals from the same institution are encouraged to participate, as metadata work often spans departments and roles.

Estimated time to complete: 20 to 30 Minutes
Deadline to respond: Tuesday, September 30, 2025

At the end of the survey, you’ll have the option to volunteer for a follow-up interview to share more detailed insights. Participation is voluntary, and your responses will remain confidential.

If you have any questions about the survey or the work of the Task Force, please reach out to the co-chairs of the Metadata Futures Task Force:

Thank you for helping us build a more connected and inclusive metadata ecosystem.

Best,
Metadata Futures Task Force

Dear Colleagues,

Thank you to everyone who has already responded to the Metadata Futures Survey. We’ve received valuable insights so far, and in response to continued interest, we’re extending the deadline to allow more time for participation.

If you haven’t had a chance to complete the survey, we invite you to share your experiences with metadata sharing, reuse, and governance in your institution or consortium. Your input will help inform community-developed guidelines aimed at supporting equitable, sustainable metadata practices across libraries.

We welcome responses from all staff engaged in metadata, systems, discovery, repositories, or vendor relations. Multiple participants from the same institution are encouraged to respond.

Estimated time to complete: 20 to 30 Minutes
Deadline to respond: November 7th, 2025

If you have any questions about the survey or the work of the Task Force, please reach out to the co-chairs:

Thank you again for contributing to this important conversation about the future of metadata sharing.

Best,
Metadata Futures Task Force
