Hi all

Thanks for your help earlier in the week contacting Councillors prior to last night's meeting of DLRCC finalising the  County Development Plan 2016 - 2022.

As you are aware although we had secured the concept of a National Watersports Centre in DL harbour following a unanimous vote last October, a number of further key principals remained to be decided last evening. I am delighted to report that all of these were agreed and will be included in the final County Development Plan.

Interestingly the majority in favour of all of the motions was larger than had been achieved last October. This shows that the Councillors are even more supportive of the concept that commercial shipping proposals within the Harbour cannot have a detrimental effect on the water based recreational uses of the Harbour and its ability to host national and international competitions. Also the plan now clearly states that as an objective to preserve the integrity, natural beauty and historical significance of the Harbour by protecting the central area from any cruise berth that would allow cruise ships longer than 250m to come directly into the Harbour and to put in place a plan for the future development of the Harbour and it's curtilage during the period of this development plan.

The submissions lodged last December in favour of these motions were mentioned frequently during the debates as were the emails sent to Councillors this week and gave the Councillors a good understanding of the views of interested members of the public.

The decision of An Bord Pleanala on the Strategic Infarstructure Development of a Cruise Ship Berth in DL Harbour is expected on or before 17th April next will likely take into account this new development plan.

It has been a huge team effort, thank you all.

Kind regards

Many congratulations and thanks to all who have both contacted their Councillors and worked tirelessly on the fantastic National Watersports Centre Plan.

Can I also add something for 2016.  To support all this hard work and effort, we as Bay and Harbour sailors MUST also get out more on the water locally, ourselves and our families.  Only this way can we actually demonstrate how important the resource is to sailors, although I know the whole campaign is about way much more than just sail-boats on the water. Of course we all also care hugely about the history, the environment, Harbour governance, etc,etc.

But I was on one of Richard Boyd Barrett’s marches down the pier last year, on a beautiful summer Sunday – there were about 2 boats out on the whole Bay !!  Thankfully a subsequent march included a co-ordinated effort to bring boats out near the pier.  The point is we need to support on-the-water club activities way more. Regular DBSC and Frostbite racing, cruising, club regattas or just getting afloat for a sail, whatever…we need boats on the water to justify our lobbying. We can’t be taken seriously if there’s all these boats permanently sitting on club forecourts and marinas, never putting to sea.

Put bluntly sailing friends ;

USE IT, OR LOSE IT !!

Hi all,

Has there been any more news or movement on this?

I've been a bit out of touch with events recently.
