Hi all,

Trying to sort out a wrinkle in committee boat duty for this year, looking for two people who can help out tomorrow evening.

The DBSC yearbook for 2016 doesn't split between PY and Laser in terms of helping out on the committee boat, calling everyone PY. Joe Hickey was trying to get in touch with Sean C about it to see if the Laser class could take a share of the days. However, with the first duty day being tomorrow, I'm reaching out broadly to see if there's anyone who would like to go on the committee boat for an evening.

There's space for two people. You get to help out on the committee boat, usually with the flag hoisting,  and to take as many photos/videos of racing as you can.....all for online use to a mass audience at dldinghies.blogspot.com

It looks like it'll be sunny and warm too, so a great opportunity to see racing from high up. You get a great perspective on the starts, tactics, etc.

Let me know if you'd like to go.

Hi Hugh,

Yes Joe contacted me for the FIRST TIME about this today.  As you say Lasers are not asked to do Flagship duty in the yearbook.  I noticed this and assumed this was perhaps because we are all single handers and because we only asked to race on Tuesdays this year, the same as last year.  He said something about 3 dates this season and I said tomorrow was far too short notice for us, especially as everybody was exhausted after the Masters this weekend and we may be down a few boats as a result anyway.  I suppose if somebody is too tired to sail they may be prepared to volunteer in which case, great, they’ll come back to you I’m sure.  I have to work myself until 7 pm all week so I’m out of things altogether.

I also pointed out that in previous years DBSC organised line duty so that a Tuesday class, say, would do their line duty on a Thursday or for SB20s on a Sunday.  Last year,  for example, I did duty (I ended up Race Officer in fact) on a Saturday.  The year before I did it for Lasers on an SB20 day.  IT IS CRAZY that dinghy classes should lose turnout and keelboats also, rather than covering for each other on different nights.  That was the (logical) system in the past I’m pretty sure.  Neither PY nor Lasers can really afford to lose 2 sailors, especially Lasers without any double handers whereby if we lose two people, we will lose two boats.

Anyway, still keen to help out a bit, as I have done in 2014 and 2015.  Joe said PY were given 3 dates.  You guys do Tuesdays and Sundays, we only do and only asked for Tuesday racing so I will do one of the dates myself with one helper.  It seems fair to me that you do two and we do one, especially as we weren’t even listed for Line duty at all !  I suppose you could also look to the small number of Lasers who have entered PY on Sundays as well as PY people for your two dates, you know who’s appearing.

But as I say, hopefully somebody, anybody can help you and PY for tomorrow night.  My “rant” is due to being asked 24 hours in advance for the first time.  PY will have known all along.

Cheers

Sean

Replying to all instead of just to Sean.

Walking and sending email didn't work too well.

Hi Sean

I only know I raised the question with dbsc a while ago when I noticed that the laser fleet didn't appear in the schedule. I'm not sure how they apportion days and would hate to overburden the laser fleet.

In any case it looks as if we have two enthusiastic participants from SID who can help out and who will get to see racing from a higher perspective.  I must say I've always learned a lot from being up high and seeing the racing with that view.

Meantime any photos or anecdotes from the laser masters would be happily hosted on the DL dinghies page. It'd be nice to have pics to stand alongside the 2014 regatta.

I'll volunteer on behalf of the SB20 class and as a Laser sailor of course. I will have another person with me , Tom O'Neill.

Let me know where and when ?

Hi all

Great so see such a positive reaction to a late appeal! Colin G, Jim F in particular, and a couple of others too who put themselves out there as reserves.

However, I have two people from the SID club, Ita and Anne, who are looking forward to a good show from the sailors tomorrow and prepared to help out on the committee boat in exchange. So remember to put on a good show. Hitting the line with speed and on time is compulsory. Neat mark roundings and always tacking within 20 seconds of the shift.

Thanks all

H
