problem with creating gif thumbnails/size versions

I noticed that GIF images in filebrowser weren't showing thumbnails or
different size versions for me, and I traced the problem to the python
imaging library. For some reason my version of PIL (1.1.6) generates
invalid GIF files if optimize is set. Here is the change I made to
work around this problem:
