How to create a custom widget?

I'm new to django and trying to create my first application and am having some difficulty. I created another post last week but haven't gotten any response. I did get some response in the IRC channel though and it was mentioned that I could use a custom widget to get the job done. I have been looking for a good example to help me learn more about widgets and how to create my own custom ones but I'm still stuck. 

I'm wondering if anyone knows of any good examples or tutorials to help me with this, or if someone would be so kind as to put a very basic example together.
