Can pipelines (and partial pipelines) be used for straight email/password registration and authentication?

Forgive the newbie question, but I like this django-social-auth for registering or authenticating via social networks.  Is it possible to use it (or extend it) when users register manually, i.e. with an email/password?  

If there were a way, I’m thinking then I could use the partial pipeline mechanism to verify emails and I’d have one basic registration and authentication flow all together.  

Or is it best to come up with a separate registration and authentication approach for email/password registered accounts?
