Shopping cart perpetually empty

Hi all,

I'm fairly new to django and followed the basic install for django-shop which *appears* to be working, in the sense that I can use the admin to add new products, go through the templates, and click 'add item to cart' - but that's where it gets quirky. Adding item to cart always reveals 'Your shopping cart is empty' - any thoughts on why this might be or how I can begin to solve my issue?

A point in the right direction much obliged. Thanks for any and all help,
