For the favicon, robots.txt and other static files served from the root of the domain, I normally configure nginx to serve them directly.  See

https://pypi.python.org/pypi/django-robots is quite nice and works nicely with Django's sitemaps contrib app https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/ref/contrib/sitemaps/

there is a caching option, so it is quite effective.

How often do you generate a new robots.txt file?
Would it be more efficient to have this file generated on demand?
