Great thread regarding Notes on a Django Migration! Among other
things, this certainly helps inform my thinking about defining models
first in django... and the options, down the road, for developing a
gui tool.

Milan, your mentioning Massimo's work with web2py reminded me of
something that might be of interest to the group. Last fall, I signed
up for the online course "Web Development with Python" through DePaul
University, which I believe is taught by Massimo Di Pierro:
http://ipd.cdm.depaul.edu/wdp/Prog_WDP.htm

However, the course did not have enough students last semester so they
wound up not offering the course after all. I just contacted the
admissions department and they said the are planning on offering the
course again in the spring. They offered to carry over my
registration from the fall over into the spring, so that was nice.

They also said they needed 10 students enrolled in order to offer the
course again. So I told them I would mention this to a few developers
to try to drum up enough applicants.

While this course makes use of web2py instead of django, it includes
an intro to Python and makes us of ajax and jQuery as well. Tell me,
does this course, or a course like it, sound like it might be useful
to people working with django-newsroom? Do you think something like
this would be a useful way to kickstart the group... to have some
shared learning experience or barcamp?

Well first and foremost I think learning Python will help folks who
want to develop on Django Newsrooom. Second to that is learning
Django and thirdly I'd say learning some of the patterns and ideas in
Pinax. Next javascript and jquery and how to integrate all this
stuff. So if a class in web2py covers 2 (Python and jquery) then that
is pretty good, so yes this course is useful. Also I think just
learning how a well packaged system like web2py could be very
valuable. Even though web2py is not as popular as Django it doesn't
really mean that technically it's superior.

Well I dunno about kick-starting the group with a course, I feel that
you should take courses for yourself, to further your own interests
because you see value in it. I see a lot of value in Django Newsroom
and the components we're designing on and hope others do too! If
people are interested in training they should definitely poke around
and post their results and thoughts or even share an online class they
are taking one. Also keep an eye out for any classes on "Designing
CMSs with Django and Javascript". ;)

Thanks Milan,

You've outlined and prioritized some clear competencies that are
coming along at just the right time.

I am meeting with one of the folks from our python group on Monday
night to do some work with django/pinax. I'm hoping that he and I can
meet fairly regularly between monthly meetings of the python group, so
to have a focused list of technologies to learn that would be useful
in working with django-newsroom, is great.

I'm also making some good headway on the django-pledgedrive app in
django and am doing some focused brainstorming here:

I feel like I'm getting a handle on some concrete tasks and processes
that will be useful as we move forward.

I have one additional question, would you be open to chatting on the
phone or in IM some time in the coming week?

All the best,

John T.

Always up for chatting and was even thinking about starting an IRC
channel once we get some code going.
I'm milan822 on AIM and Skype.
