Hey gang...

Just got confirmation that Jacob Kaplan-Moss is very interested in
coming to the Nashville area and speaking to our group. I wanted to
put this out there to see if there was any interest amongst the group
in having him join us. The format and topics are open to suggestion.

This could be a good opportunity to give bring some life back into
this group. i bet we could get a turnout for that, and afterwards a
portion of that turnout might become regulars to meetings.

Rockin'... as long as it doesn't majorly conflict with anything I've got going on, I'm all in!

It sounds like an interesting idea, I'm just wondering what the cost
would be to bring him down here? Also, when and where would
we get together?

thanks,
Matt

That's a no-brainer my friend.

If you get him they will come.  I know I'll be there.

StudioNow would be more than happy host if that is amenable to everyone.

That's great news. I'm cool with having it at StudioNow as well.

Cabedge has agreed to pay the cost to get him here. Jacob's initial
thought was a Saturday meetup with perhaps a few hours of presentation
in the morning, break for lunch, and a few more hours in the afternoon
for Q&A/Discussion. We could do a meetup in the evening on a weekday,
but that would limit us to just 2 or 3 hours of his time.

Shannon makes a good point that we could use this to reignite the
django community in Nashville. This could also prove a good
opportunity to get some momentum behind the Nashville Python group
that Matt George has started.

As for location...We've made some contacts at Hutton Hotel, Bethel,
Vandy, and Belmont to see what our options are. Until we can get a
decent guesstimate on the size of the group it's hard to nail anything
down. Hoping one of these may provide a space in exchange for a
sponsorship.

I'm all for StudioNow hosting...how many people do you think you could
comfortably seat Patrick?

Josh, thanks so much for leading the way on this. It's very exciting
that this is happening.

I'm on my way back to Nashville right now. Emma will definitely help
however we can. I'll be able to focus a little more on it in the
morning.

Probably comfortable for a small sized evening meetup.  But from what it sounds like from you other email, this will likely be more like a Django BarCamp -- which I think would be really cool and want to help in anyway I/we can.

Depending on the size and the availability we may have some more options but before i speak any further about it I want to do some investigation.

Thanks, Josh, for heading up this effort.

Maybe I missed it... but are there are dates picked out? Trying to clear my schedule.

StudioNow has two options available to us in hosting depending on the size.

In our office we can accommodate around 20-30.  We also have access to a meeting facility in the same building as our office that can hold around 200 that is fully equipped with projectors, sound, etc.  We would need to coordinate with building management to schedule this on the calendar, would be our only limitation, but it is generally available so shouldn't be a problem.

For those that don't know where our offices are, I think we'd be pretty centrally located as well.  We are in the Sony Music building on 18th Avenue South, across the street from Vandy.

Thanks,
Patrick

I'm leaning towards a date in January so we have time to get the word
out and organize. January 23rd or 30th would give us time to get past
the holidays and kickoff the new year with a great meeting. I'll need
to confirm Jacob's availability and Patrick will need to verify
availability for the StudioNow conference space, so the sooner we can
decide on a date the better. Any other thoughts for a date?

Hey Josh,
First, thanks for doing this. Second, I just wanted throw in my 2
cents that I think the idea of a Saturday in late January sounds
great.

Any update on this?

I'd like to go ahead an reserve the space (we have confirmation that the space is available for Saturdays in Jan) and help start getting this thing planned and promoted if it going to be "a go".

Let me know what I can do to help.

Patrick

Thanks for the bump Patrick. I've asked Jacob to check his schedule
for Saturday, January 30 and will let you know as soon as I get some
confirmation.

I've asked him to consider bringing out his "Django in the Real World"
presentation from OSCON. You can download a PDF of the slides at
http://en.oreilly.com/oscon2009/public/schedule/detail/8159. That's a
fairly robust presentation that covers a lot of topics from structure
to testing to deployment to load balancing/distribution. If anyone
else has specific requests for a topic please post it here and I'll
ask him to include it if the group concurs. Hopefully there will also
be a time for Q&A with Jacob to address any specific questions you
might have.

Josh
