Node insertion order (centre/middle)

Hey there!

Firstly, thanks to everyone for contributing to this project - it's helped us out a lot!

I'd like to control the node insertion such that new nodes are always inserted in the centre of its siblings (if there are an even number of siblings [1, 2, X, 3, 4]) or to the left of centre (if there are an odd number of siblings [1, X, 2, 3]).

I can 'hack' the source to achieve this, but was wondering if anyone had any cleaner solutions for this problem?
