Problems upgrading to 2.8.1 (and Django 2.9)

I've screwed something up in my grappelli setup.  Both my testing and production environments have django-grappelli==2.8.1

But the code they generate is different.  I have a date field which shows up differently.

Any idea what I could have screwed up?

Production:

Testing:

it seems that some JS is

a) either not loaded or

b) has not been updated with collectstatic
