Starting with open source

Hello everyone, My name is Piyush Dive  & I'm currently a student of CS. I am familiar with python & django and Currently doing web development. I want to get started with open source & get selected in gsoc but i saw the pull requests & code base of django and i didn't understood a single thing i am not understanding how can i contribute in this project where i don't understand a single thing. Can anyone of you help me out with it? I really want to contribute to open source but don't know how to start...
