What's the community position about AutoSlugField functionality in Django?

Basically, subj.

I use this functionality myself a lot and don't wanna having to implement it as 3rd-party app anymore. 

I found ticket #12651, but it seems to be forgotten. I'd like to start working on it, but want to make sure it is still acceptable officially.

Suggestion on implementation details are welcome too (concerns about DB load, etc.).
