Why is there no email field in either people or profiles?

Just wondering if it was a design decision to leave out an email field
for people but to keep websites. Seems like more people have email
addresses than websites.
Any idea would be great. Obviously I've already forked the project and
added it, but it would be nice to have this in the main branch.
