This log output doesn't say anything about creating a user, so it must be finding an existing one (perhaps previously created by LDAPBackend). Authentication (simple_bind) is working, as you would not otherwise get to populating the user. I would first make sure that this user has is_active=True. More generally, I would put a password on the user FOOBAR and try to log in via ModelBackend. If you can log in with a single user through ModelBackend but not LDAPBackend and there's no exception in the log, then we'll have a mystery.
