my shaft coupling shit the bed this morning and i most definitely need
a new one.

kinda explains why i haven't been able to make any way under power as
of late...
that coupling spins nicely while the shaft just kinda hangs out and watches.
lovely.

thanks!

sounds like you lost the keyway. should be an easy fix. They may have something in stock at Crackerboy boatyard ((561) 845-0357) between the port and Riviera beach marina. I will ask Bob though. Hopkins marine, right downtown WPB between 6th and 7th street, between Flagler and Olive, also may have something in stock.  (561) 832-4206.
Good luck,
D

Thanks Donna,
but crackerboy deals with bobby sole propellers, who didn't have my
coupling. i ended up getting one from Stuart Propeller and had a
friend drive it down to me.

but, for other's future reference, Bobby Sole could have ordered my
coupling for me in three days, so it would have happened at some
point.

and yeah, the key way was stripped out completely.
90bucks later, i'm back up and running and made port everglades late
last night after beating my brains out along the coast.. i knew that
small craft advisory was bullshit. even with a 4ft NE swell, there's
no way that 9-11kt south winds can produce 9foot seas in the gulf
stream. although they were in the 5-6foot range, and very choppy.

aaaaanyway... thanks again.
keep on keepin' on.

Well, better a key way than a coupling. Thanks for the info on Bobby...yes, you are right. Gosh it didn't seem too bad here, but I am sure it was rough out there. Good luck Darrin. Are you an OceansWatch member? What are your cruising plans?
thanks a million,
Donna

well.. thing is, the keyway is just a slot that's machined into the
coupling, so when the keyway goes out, the coupling is finished, but a
bad coupling is a hell of a lot better than if the keyway on the prop
shaft wore away. tha would involve hauling out... and muchos dolares.

my plan is to sail to havana, pick up my crew, sail to either belize
or straight to guatemala, then honduras, then panama before hurricane
season. i'm finally getting northerly winds tomorrow. throwin' a reef
in the main and hauling ass south.

Hun, I had a key way that was made of a softer metal. It would sheer before the coupling or shaft were damaged. It only cost pennies. I blew through a few over time. I guess if the slot itself cracked, it would ruin the coupling. Yours must be different. Do you want to do any OW work? We have a contact in Belize that is very interested in OW and having members check in there. Let me know. I guess you are  heading for the Pacific. Any contacts that can be made along the way or input on needs of coastal communities is helpful to us.
Anyway...
Good luck hauling ass south!!!!
best wishes,
D

yup. my key was bronze. still managed to sheer the shit out of the
coupling over time. i think the straw that broke the camel's back was
when i was trying to anchor in significant chop, and the prop was
coming out of the water, then plunging back into it the previous day.
and THAT, is why you should never use an engine... for anything. :-)

don't really know anything about OW. i won't commit to anything before
i do some research. not much time for that at the moment, but i'll get
around to it.

stoked you're underway! small craft advisory is advising small craft
to get going right?
hopefully we'll still be here when you get around, or we run into yall
underway. good luck on your travels, and no more engine problems!

All good. give us a look when you get a chance. Yes...I may have missed that you had an outboard...I have destroyed one and working one number two outboard. Just can't get used to not using the engine to 'get it done'. Oh well. good luck to you.
