Ahoy.
It’s
always difficult to figure out if something is gaining popularity or if
you’re simply stumbling upon an ongoing social current. Regardless, a
few of us have noticed that a few more of us are shipping out and
heading off to sea. This puts us in connection with people who have been
doing the “boat livin/boat punk” thing for a long time and lets us
facilitate newcomers’ experiences. We write blogs, zines, make movies,
organize and attend meetups, sail together and travel around; all these
things cultivate momentum. To build upon, and document, some of this
momentum we’re making an attempt at a small anthology. Not quite a book,
and no promise of continuance to denote a magazine or periodical, think
of it similar to a special edition of the New Yorker.
Ourselves
being the editors and organizers, we’re hoping to solicit a host of
writings and submissions from anyone who feels excited about this
subcultural current or wants to share the experiences they’ve had within
it. This can come in the form of stories, articles, reviews, artwork,
promotions for ongoing projects, movies, interviews (requested yourself
to be interviewed or submitting one), comics, Q&A/FAQ (submit
questions for this), and anything else you think would be appropriate in
the spirit of this project. Obviously the submissions will shape the
vision, and we encourage you to submit or ask questions about the
project, which is currently at its birthing stages.
To
give you an idea of what might be contained in this, here are some
topics that have been proposed, requested, or submitted thus far:
-Resource list of books/sites
-Reviews of films and books
-Stories about boat ownership/getting a boat together
-Stories about hitching the oceans
-Moving your family onto a boat
-Quotes
-Report back from the Sailboatmeetup in Guatemala
-Working on ships and boats : activism and education
-Thoughts around seeking freedom at sea
-Blue Anarchy
-Art, prints, music
-Free living on the water
-Sea Steading/Sailing the Farm: Experiences and Experiments
-Engineless Sailing
-Q&A/FAQ : Submit questions you have for this!
-Fiction
-Surviving sanely in the cruising/boating community
-The Boatyard
-Making money/Surviving on a boat
-Stories about pirates and being pirated.
-The wacky process of becoming a Captain/Jobs at Sea
-Boat living in cities
Hopefully
this list has spiked your interest and perhaps is prompting you to
think of a topic of your own, or to contribute to one of these topics.
Wonderful. Please keep in touch with us and we’ll see what we can put
together. We are also humbly requesting that you distribute this
call-out for submissions wildly amongst your friends, peers, and
co-conspirators. Hundreds of call-outs for projects meander throughout
the internet daily, so we suggest attempts to contact interested parties
more directly (e.g., phone calls, direct emails, conversations...).
Chances are you’ll be hearing from us again.
We’re
hoping to have a body of submissions and proposals assembled by the
dawn of the new year (early January). The current contact email for the
project is:

Looking forward to your exciting contributions to an exciting project.
