I've been experimenting with the new DecaWave DWM1000 modules.  These offer a way to use Ultra Wideband pulse transmissions to perform ranging with up to 10 centimeter accuracy.  With 3 fixed "anchor" units and one roving "tag" module it's possible to do 2D tracking.  And, according to the manufacturer, they can also be used outdoors (within limits.)  Here's a link to an article describing my results, so far:

To get an idea of what's possible using this hardware and the open source Arduino library I'm using, see this guys video:

Wow, that looks like a really good way to do tracking.  Should be great for testing,  Thanks for the heads-up on this.

I agree.. Great work.  I read about these modules.   Looking forward to hearing more about it.

One interesting point: in the video it appears that the guy doing the demo used 3 fixed ground stations to do the tracking, but really one would only need 2.  You do have to deal with left/right ambiguities, but in testing you probably already know which side the rover is on.

Also, looks like it has a range up to 300m; should be enough for what I want to do.

I've just bought some too ... :-)

Does anyone have an eagle layout or breakout yet you would like to share ;-)

Hi,

Thanks.

There is a raw breakout on OSHpark already ...

I was hoping for an eagle file, so I could add a few things ... :-)

My DWM1000 breakout is here:

It's smaller and cheaper than the other one mentioned ($3.50 to order 3 copies) and only breaks out the needed signal lines.  It includes a pull down resistor (R3) for the IRQ line, RX and TX LEDs (not currently supported by software) and a spot for a decoupling cap (C1)..

I don't use Eagle, so an Eagle file in unavailable.  The software I use for PCB design, Osmond PCB, is Mac only.  I'm happy to share the layout for for Osmond if someone want to give it a go.  It's a rather old school PCB layout tool, so it might not be to your tastes,

Hi Wayne,

I have been checking out your blog recently, and you have a lot of awesome content posted. I'm a little late to the group, but I wouldn't mind trying out the layout for Osmond if you are still willing to share the files!

Nick
