Hey everyone,

I saw flyers at Jubilee, but I wanted to make sure everyone heard about the PBS film Fixing the Future that's being screened across the country yesterday and today. It did a great job of articulating the new/DIY economy to people unfamiliar with the concepts. If it's not screening in your area, I think there's a way to order it online.

Local organizations (coops, time banks, buy local/BALLE orgs) are co-hosts of the screenings and share opportunities to get involved with the audience. I made it back from Asheville just minutes before hosting the screening here in DC!

It was great to meet you all, and I look forward to collaborating more.

Post about Fixing The Future on Social Media TODAY!
If you haven't posted about your event today, take a minute and go to Facebook and Twitter and make a post. By getting all of our hosts to post on the same day across the country, we raise the likelihood that the event will "Trend" on Twitter and appear in News Feeds on Facebook, spreading the exposure of the event to people all over the country.
  • Twitter: Use #FixingtheFuture or #FtF and @FixingtheFuture in all tweets!
    • Example: Join [@YourOrganization] and @FixingtheFuture to build strong local economies! [Your Event Date and Location]! #FTF Buy tickets: http://ow.ly/benwx
  • Facebook: Tag @Fixing the Future and share the link to the website, trailer, or ticketing website in all posts!
  • *Tip: Always include a link to the "Buy Tickets" page of your local theater, to encourage people to purchase ahead of time and save their seat.
Social Media: Night of the Event
  • Live-Tweet your event. Designate someone from your organization to post updates, questions, quotes and photos from your event in real time! Don't forget to tag #FixingtheFuture and @FixingtheFuture.
  • Check in to your local theater and to Fixing The Future on Foursquare.
  • Take pictures and share them on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter! Tag @FixingTheFuture in your pictures!
Tips on Taking Good Pictures
  • Use the best camera you can get your hands on. A digital point-and-shoot is fine, but you'll have greater range and more flash options if you can use a digital SLR.
  • If you're using a camera phone, keep these tips in mind:
    • Hold the phone like a camera, using two hands.
    • Avoid using the zoom function, since it will make your photos more grainy.
    • Use your flash in dark rooms (after the film has screened).
    • Set your phone to the highest resolution.
  • Capture the setting. Take photos of the front of the venue, a close-up shot of the display table if it contains event signage/logos, a shot of the full audience taken from the front of the room, and other pictures that give people a sense of the overall layout of the event.
  • Get close. Individual close-up shots of the panelists will likely seem more animated than a wide shot of a line of people sitting at a table. A photo of a few people laughing, engaged in a conversation or an audience member standing up to ask a question during the Q&A session will give viewers a good sense of the "feel" of your event. But remember to capture it in context, with the audience and/or signage in the background, for example.
  • Take action shots! It's great to take a few photos of people posing for the camera, but try to take photos of people in action, too -- a panelist speaking, an audience member reading through a brochure, folks at your reception, etc.
  • Get signed releases: We'd love to post pictures on Active Voice's website and Facebook page, but we need permission first. Download and complete a simple photo release form here, and return to nic...@activevoice.net
Post-Event Survey
On Wednesday morning, we'll be sending out a link to our post-screening survey, which we'll ask you to please complete by the end of the week while the details of your event (the number of attendees, topics discussed, response to your local call-to-action, etc.) are still fresh in your mind. Please be on the lookout for it!

After Your Event: What's Next?
We're hosting a post-screening webinar on July 26th (mark your calendar!) about how to continue the conversation and sustain momentum in your community. Please let us know what the most convenient time to attend would be here (note: all times are PST).

Keep up the great work!

Best,
The Fixing the Future Team
