I wrote this up during the meeting and shared it with those of you who
were there. Being that it was late at night, please re-read it and
analyze it and tear it apart. Give constructive criticism and add your
own ideas. Thanks, Stu

Our goal is to create and maintain a safe and welcoming space for
the community. Through various arts including, but not limited to,
music, visual arts, spoken word, and literature we aim to reach out
into the community and facilitate positive expression. We believe in
welcoming all types of people, rich, poor, young, and old in a
respectful environment. We are a collectively run not for profit
organization who believe strongly in the DIY ethos.

I like the general ideas you have there. I wonder if we should focus
on our DIY, collective, and artistic purpose and goals and less on
having a space. Focusing on a space in our mission may become a
problem if getting a space takes too long. It may be hard to get
people to support multiple benefits after awhile. If we focus more on
DIY organizing and art we can accomplish things that are visibly in
line with our mission from the beginning. That may help build the
support needed to get an actual space.

Of course, if we find any ways to get funding or cheap space a la the
Mess Hall, everything I said is irrelevant.

However, we can word our mission in such a way that the concept of
creating a safe space works for holding events or having an actual
venue. Just my two cents. I'd like to hear everybody else's. The
mission is probably one of the most important and challenging things
we have to figure out soon.

I like what Chris said about focusing more on our mission so maybe we
should change our statement. Essentially, it should say something
like "we are here to encourage and showcase the creation of D.I.Y. art
within our community" right?

and to create a sense of camaraderie between various promotors and spaces?

I've been trying to think of how to word a mission statement for this but it feels harder without a space to write about.. haha. It's pretty abstract but we have to make sure it's not so open ended sounding that it seems like we're not actually doing anything.

I think that within the mission statement we could mention the desire
for a space but that our efforts go towards being part of a community
based organization that is here to help promote a communal space and
lifestyle while attending, promoting or hosting shows. I think people
from the start should know that our plans our to create a space.
