Are these meetings open to anyone?
DIY, all-ages spaces have been really important to me throughout my
life and playing in bands, I've definitely benefited from and been
inspired by them. I'd love to help bring one to Chicago.
I'm finishing up grad school during the next three months, so I don't
know how much sweat I can put into this project in the short-term, but
I'd like to at least see where things are going and help out where I
can.
Also, me and my friend Chiara and her two daughters are trying to move
into a loft space with room for art studios, band practice and maybe
music and art shows. We want to create a space that offers
inexpensive access to resources and infrastructure for people who are
under-represented in art and music, in particular women and girls. We
also want to expand the idea of all-ages spaces to include children
and their families. At the beginning we'd like this to be a
laboratory where we can experiment with the balance between living and
community space. In the long-run, it might be a platform for
community-grounded arts education. I know this kind of open living
space is a little different and more specific than a collective show
space, but we're really interested in talking or collaborating with
others, at the very least to make sure what we're doing with doesn't
try to meet the exact same needs as other projects.
Best,
Geoff
