I talked to my landlord about getting in touch with the people that
run Mess Hall. She said that if we want to learn what they did right
when opening a new space we should just go to some of their events and
talk to them. I plan on going a few times before our next meeting. It
would be great if someone else would like to come along and be the
kinder, gentler, prettier, happier face of our organization.

Also I thought we could use this thread to discuss spaces in Chicago
that do more than have shows.

Obviously each of these spaces are completely different but I would
like to think that we can learn something from each of them.

I will probably go either on October 8th or 10th.

I'll try to make it, too. Not sure if the 8th or 10th are good for me,
but I'll try. I've only been to the Mess Hall once (kinda far for a
southsider) but I thought it was a pretty cool space and the people
were extremely nice and open to talking about the space. The
environmental sustainability discussion on the 10th is of particular
interest to me. I'm not sure if the time works, though. We'll see.

Another space is the Experimental Station in Hyde Park.

David from Daylight Robbery is involved in that space. I'll talk to
him about it. No Slogan once played at the University of Hip Hop space
that was on Kedzie near 65th or something. I checked their website and
it seems like the space is no longer there, though. It would be
interesting to talk to people who are more music-oriented like that.
It seems like our space may be more focused on music than many of the
other spaces in Chicago, even though we want to do more than music
too. I don't remember who the hookup was, but I'll ask around.

Ahh unfortunately I'll be in Philly from the 8th-11th so I can't make any of that stuff.

Experimental Station is rad! Community bakery and bike shop and cafe and classes.

I agree that trying to find an example that is mostly music-oriented but with other things too would be ideal. I can't think of anything off the top of my head.

Hey Nathan, I'd be interested to check out the Mess Hall on either of those dates. I was also thinking about checking out Rumble Arts. I've been there a few times but never talked to anyone running it.

Let me know which day you want to go on and I'll make sure to be there.

Just chiming in with my two cents. My impression of Mess Hall is that
they do a really great job of being accessible to the community where
they're located while having a clear mission. Interestingly enough,
by one account of a Mess Hall keyholder, they decided not to be a
music venue to minimize their footprint on their neighborhood. I'm
sure they could offer some good insight on being transparent and open
as a space.

In terms of spaces that are mostly music plus a little more, the
Trumbullplex in Detroit comes to mind. Their theater collective
organizes shows and other performances but also some art shows and
meals. Bobby Columbo (http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?
id=553972942) would be a good person if anyone is interested in
hearing how they sustain their space.

Best,
Geoff

Hey Nate, just to give you a heads up I won't be able to make it out
to the Mess Hall tonight. I can't pass up the opportunity to make some
extra money. Sorry!
