Hi folks.
Been thinking some more about the interactive/visualisation side of
this. This is a reasonably small dataset (even if we get it all down),
and the geography is obviously the key factor, so I see this as a
super-enhanced version of the Google map. It would be filterable, by a
wide number of categories, to allow users to investigate possible
patterns in the data.
There are instinctively some bits of data that I'd want to see: which
locations gave the most microbes, which areas gave the least, whether
routes "in" or "out" yielded different results, that kind of thing.
I propose a map similar to the Google one, but simplified down so it
shows roads and big features, but none of the clutter of the full map.
All the markers would be on at the same time, each of the ten teams
colour-coded. Hovering over a marker would show the exact details
(long, lat, name, and thumbnail of the sample with a numerical sample
count and more details of the samples maybe?)
The map would have a load of controls at the top that would allow the
user to highlight stuff like:
- single teams routes
- all the "in" or "out" points
- the sites that gave off the most microbes
- the sites that gave off the least microbes
etc etc
The markers could also be clicked again to show a nice full high-res
image of the sample too.
I also like the idea of having a view that just shows all the samples
in a big grid, so people can browse through. Like the Flickr page but
sexier!
Does this sound like it would be useful?
Chip in some ideas if you have 'em, and if your team hasn't put their
data into the document then get to it!
