Hi folks,

So, August is disappearing fast... We've planned to have a microbe-inspired picnic on Sunday 21st and it's coming up quick!

This will be in the format of Teawitter parties which Madlab has hosted in the past (and the Teawitter team are helping out): People bring contributions of food and cake, Madlab provides tea and other hot drinks, the team provide slightly more substantial offerings, donations accepted to cover costs (and any excess donated to Madlab).

Who's going to be there, and what are you going to bring? I've set up a doodle poll to get some idea of numbers, so it would be great if people could sign up to that:

Post here to the list what you're thinking of bringing so we don't get too many duplicates!

Suggestions for picnic foods and ingredients whose preparation includes microbiology:

Bread/yeast based baked goods
All manner of cheeses
Chocolate
Olives
Quorn
Yoghurt
After Eights
Fermented products (e.g. Kimchi)
Alcohol!

I'm sure there are plenty of others too..

I might make some cinnamon buns, which are a yeast dough recipe.

Thanks all,

Naomi

Having just received a copy of the Momofuku cookbook from a friend of mine, I'll be getting some pickling done ready for Sunday. Plus, if I can find a use for cold Dashi I'll bring some of that along too :-) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dashi

Not got the instant stuff?  Adding hot water at Madlab shouldn't be a problem...

I've managed to get hold of a stash of Konbu and Bonito, so thought that might be cheating. Would be a lot easier for a picnic though, certainly!

I'll bring some of my homemade piccalilli. I hope someone brings some ripe old stinky cheese to go with it
