Hey folks!
In addition to the continuing sea slug project this month, there will also be another two classes offered. The first one is completely new and is all about BIOLUMINESCENCE, which is pretty sweet. The organisms we will see in this class actually MAKE LIGHT. Pretty sweet! This will be offered the weekend of June 9 and 10. On the 9th, we will do most of the meeting and discussing, and the evening of the 10th we will enjoy the (glowing) fruits of our labor. All participants will get to take home some bioluminescent algae in a nice borosilicate flask. Sign up
HERE.
The second class will be BIOCAMP 101, which is targeted at people with little to no biology experience, or those who want to get hands on with biology. This is the the bootcamp version of the original biotech 101 class, in that it is condensed into one weekend to make it more convenient- let me know if this is not a good way to do it. This will be on Friday 22 and Sunday 24. On Saturday, we will go practice aseptic technique, learn about different kinds of media, and then put new genes (DNA) into bacteria! On Sunday 24, we will extract DNA or protiens from transformed bacteria and visualize it on an agarose gel. Sign up
HERE.
Thats all for classes this month. Stay tuned for an arduino/hardware hacking day. Sign-ups and info about classes and past classes can be found at
www.BOSSLAB.org, or at the above links.
Recap of what happened this month:
-two biotech 101 classes were launched and will soon be completed
-we tried a new plasmid, and it totally worked!
-I stocked us up on critical lab supplies
-WE GOT AN AUTOCLAVE. It doesn't work yet, currently I am engaging in eBay shenanigans to either get our money back or get replacement parts.
-We stared the sea slug project.
