DIYLAB for bio-inspired product design

Im a biologist in LA looking for inspiration and collaboration within this area:

Is anyone doing a DIY lab based around the concept of sustainable bio-inspired product design (fashion, industrial, architectural projects), utilizing synthetic as well as bio-based materials?
