I know very little about vacuum pumps but I don't understand how a vacuum pump can smell something. Is there some inherent feature of vacuum pumps that allow them to detect smell?

It stands for Microelectromechanical Systems, according to a different article I saw. It apparently has to do with making sensors smaller to make micro versions of larger machines.
One example that they used was that of a mass spectrometer but most seemed to be talking as if this pump itself could smell and I didn't know if that was a property of vacuum pumps or not! Haha
