The actor and writer David Hewlett (probably best known for his character of Rodney McKay in the Stargate franchise) has been making YouTube videos himself lately and wants to start some projects online. I have actually been planning a few projects with him myself and turned him on to biohacking. I would really like to create a introduction to DIY bio series, and the David is also excited about the idea. He is talking to some people about funding so basically what I need is advisors and labs who were willing to work with us in production. This won't all be happening right away but I will link you his video about it. Feel free to leave a comment to their or a response here as I will be checking them. Underneath this video is also the current draft of my concept of the series. Any advice related to that is also appreciated. Thank you.
The biohacking or DIY bio community is a little known or often misunderstood community. It is a collection of professional researchers, students, and hobby scientists who hope to use modern biotechnology tools for independent projects that are not necessarily associated with a school or company. As with all modern biotechnology a majority of these tool relate to engineering and utilizing microorganisms such as bacteria, algae, and yeast. Many of these organisms can and are used to produce materials, medicines, fuels, and other unique compounds that are useful. Biohacking or DIY bio is mainly about getting more people involved in biotechnology, whether from programming, other sciences, or simply interested people. The hacker mentality simply leads to more openness between groups and a desire to innovate and tinker. There is a lot of cooperation online between community supported labs and ambitious individuals who attempt such a biotechnology projects.
The goal of this series is to educate people on biotechnology in general, independent or DIY biotechnology, and to give interested people a foundation of knowledge for getting involved themselves. To do this each episode will come in one of three styles, educational, interview/documentary, and tutorials. Educational videos will simply explain the science behind some tools used in modern biotechnology to provide that foundation of knowledge, and will be modeled after Khan Academy and similar educational channels. Interview/documentary episodes will work with well-established biohacking labs to discuss what they do and what kind of projects they are working on, and will be modeled after channels such as Periodic Videos, Sixty Symbols, and in The Brain Scoop. Tutorial episodes will feature an experienced biohacker demonstrating biotechnology procedures that will increase in complexity as the series goes on. This will allow newer groups or ambitious individuals to attempt such projects or at least give them a better idea of what to do when first joining the community. These episodes will be modeled after the amazing cooking show Good Eats.
The entire series may also be accompanied by a free, but professionally designed online course to supplement the videos in educating people new to this topic.
