"Any attempts to unduly limit the freedom of amateur biologists could drive what is currently an open and engaged community into an ‘underground activity’. Further open dialogue should be encouraged, not stifled."  Catherine Jefferson via this blog post.  Which led me to find her report to the Wellcome Trust:

"Governing Amateur Biology: Extending Responsible Research and Innovation in Synthetic Biology to New Actors"
Research Report for the Wellcome Trust Project on ‘Building a Sustainable Capacity in Dual-Use Bioethics.

Nice recognition of the DIYbio codes developed at two congresses in 2011.

Oof... once again those "Codes of Ethics" are misrepresented to apply to the entire biohacking community. I am not really sure how to stop that. I guess nobody reading those documents ever cares to double check or think about it. How could "delegates" represent unaffiliated individuals? It doesn't make sense.

Somebody’s going around saying they represent me? Isn’t that... Kind of like a fraud?

The report is a tad shallow. Only one interview in the biblio. Most from books.
Not saying it isnt favourable to diybio.
cheers

I see what you are saying.  The code being written by "participants" in the congress is a better terminology.  delegation is loaded.
