If this is any indication:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ryangrepper/coolest-cooler-21st-century-cooler-thats-actually

it will help to add many non-core features to your lab gear concept. Extra features will
up its cool factor in favor of merely a low price and high performance to price ratio...
Oh, and slick plastic industrial design too, (of course).

Maybe slap a water proof bluetooth speaker on any piece of lab gear for a boost?

6.7M USD and counting...

And don't forget to completely over blow the "cool factor" (even though it's just a divided cooler with a speaker) in your video so people will share it on their social media sites.

Or you could market something completely pointless. Like potato salad http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/324283889/potato-salad

That one really disgusts me. It seems to be a celebration of mediocrity... with updates and
attribution, as in, "Let's all be mediocre together!".

$3 level: Estimated delivery: Dec 2014

"Receive a bite of the potato salad, a photo of me making the potato salad, a 'thank you' posted to our website and I will say
your name out loud while making the potato salad."

Wonder if I could kickstart a large nickel column for homemade taq
purification. backers get a vial of pure taq (2mL) and homemade
buffer :P or at least some dialysis tubing around the Dalton range of
the polymerase and just salt it out old school.

You'd have to explain what it's good for. If it's just for people on this list
there are crowdfund sites or software you use yourself for much less or zero
finance load. Kickstarter.com and paypal or other CC companies keep about 10%
of the total spent on their projects.

You could offer up a course with kickstarter as the money channel and skip if not enough interest, and
it seems to me it would pay off some of the other work you do...and members of this list would come...
because you could pack 4 years of job exp. into an 8 day course.

The question is, "Would the students and you do 16 hr days as well?"

Probably just a 4 day course -- use TV chef techniques, where intermediate steps and prepped and ready to view
by starting them in waves in preparation for the scheduled class event.

On second glance, it could even be a nasty joke by some sharpies. The concept could have originated like this:
"So, if we promote this crap/nothing with all the usual bells and whistles, will it still sell?
If so, let's do it! No on will be able to arrest us for any crime. It is kind of criminal, but think of
the fun we'll have on the beach with our air fare paid and a week's hotel bills and a little expense account for food.
We probably won't even have to order cheap potatoe salad!"

And then they go viral and get $61K! They shift to staying on the beach for a month, then tour the
world for another 3 months laughing all the way.
