Interest in macroalgae

Is there much interest here in macroalgae (seaweed) cultivation?

I have seen an idea where seaweed is grown collected and the oil is removed but the smaller algae is far more efficient for this. seaweed can be engineered for structure and subsistence if there is desire.

I think I heard about someone making a closed-loop fish tank system
that had an algae component for purification.

I think the use of macroalgae is for biogas, etc, as opposed to oils/lipids.
