Is it a problem if a centrifuge only has 1 speed? It's 11.5krpm. Is there anything wrong with that? I'm trying to buy one but I'm short on cash. There's one on Ebay for $50ish including shipping. Should I skip it?

Thanks,
Alex

generally things like protoplasts don't like high speed, and sometimes
you only want to pellet certain things, so it depends what you're
using it for.

I'd keep an eye out for an Eppendorf 5415C microcentrifuge.

I got two of them off ebay from separate sellers.  One for $50 and one for $75.

Look for ones that have "Best Offer" and see if you can get them for cheap.  Sometimes your offer will get rejected, but you can just try again.  The seller I spoke to said they just want to move equipment, so getting $75 today is better than maybe getting $200 sometime in the next month.  Or, check for one that has a buy it now within your range.

You can also click on "sold listings" at the top, and check what ones sold for what price from what seller, then go to that sellers shop and see if they have multiple items of the same type for sale, or send them an email saying you're interested in buying another microcentrifuge if they get one in stock again soon.

I can't comment on the usefulness or lack of usefulness of a single speed.  I basically use 10krpm and 13krpm on mine (13krpm 95% of the time) so perhaps a single speed would work fine.

np glad you found one.  I still have a few pieces of equipment I need to snag and I should be more diligent on scouring ebay.  On a side note, it also could be a side source of income.  Buy low sell high.  The only problem is everything I buy low I want to keep!

Thanks for the tips! Now I'm on the hunt! Seems like the deals are gone currently. I'll keep a subscription to it though!

I agree with Nathan - a single speed microcentrifuge will be somewhat
limiting. You'll mainly use it at full speed but occasionally need to
spin at half speed, around 9000rcf. I've seen some decent 2-speed
microcentrifuges that work well.

I second the suggestion to go for a 5415C. They are cheap, reliable
and have adjustable speed. I would prefer it over the newer 5415D
model as the C will outlast the D even though it's roughly twice as
old. The D tends to have a problem with the power converter after
5-10 years of moderate use.

Ah, my phone app wasn't showing best offers and I wasn't signed in in my mobile browser. Once I signed in and viewed in desktop mode I could then see the "best offer" auctions.

And good info to know about C's vs D's Cory, thank you!
