The problem with GMO to save a species from genetic erosion is the fact that people will not touch them due to fear. This is mainly due to the Organic "Natural Craze" If you look at any organic or natural package alot of them say non-gmo. I agree it would be a lot of fun to make a transgenic Orange.

Well, as the article says, they either drink gm-orange juice or apple juice if "natural" oranges are extinct.

Citrus greening is a climate related problem in Hawaii, not caused by a bacterium, so I found this article amusing in how poorly researched and myopic in scope it was. To me, it sounded like right-wing groups harping about how gay marriage is a sure sign of the apocalypse.

Verticillium is a problem for California avocado growers, but although the particular strain of the disease is present in Hawaii, it isn't as significant.

My point being, causal organisms in one area may not be as virulent in other locales.

I find this hard to believe that a rootstock somewhere in China isn't easier and less costly to implement for disease control.

Any further interdisciplinary analysis may want to research "red queen theory" and selection against pathogens that kill their host.
