"We tried to hack a piezo speaker into a micromanipulator. by sratching away the silver electrode into 4 quarters, we can morph the piezo in different modes. in the center we attached a glass fiber melt-drawn from a pipette. applying voltages to the different parts on the piezo allows to subtly move the glass probe. in this example we use the digital pins from the arduino to control the probe position. next step we will apply analog and higher voltages."

This sounds similar to the disk scanner in the  $100 scanning tunneling microscope:

Just so.  In fact I met a guy at the Open Science Summit who was working on an improved design inspired by that site and other forums.  I don't have his email, though, which is a bummer...

Mac, I think I met the same guy at the Summit myself, and may have his contact
info somewhere around here; still inputting business cards into my
contacts manager
from a summer of traveling & conference attendance myself. In the meantime, I'm
BCC'ing my buddy Joe Jackson, the organizer of the event, who _should_ have
that contact information at hand.

I think I even took pics of his device on the card table in the
exhibitor wing; I should
post those somewhere soon.
