In retrospect I am probably growing and dealing with Magnetite crystals, not pure iron(II)  oxide
Magnetite is basically a crystal mineral combination of both iron(II) oxide and iron(III) oxide.
A good crystal of magnetite can be quite ferromagnetic so close enough I guess ;)

more experimentation needed.. yay :D
