E Coli BL21D3 vs BL21(DE3)

Hi Everyone,

I stumbled across the Aqualose project from Imperial College and their protocol for co-culture with G. xylinus used an anerobic strain of E Coli dubbed BL21D3...which I cannot find anywhere. Is the NEB competent cell strain BL21(DE3) the actual strain and they just made a typo or am I missing something. Thanks!

Performing a search (also referencing E. Coli Gene Expression Protocols (Humana, 2003)), it would appear that BL21D3 were marketed by ThermoFischer Scientific (Invitrogen) and Novagen (Merck?), not sure if there are any significant differences between BL21(D3) and BL21(DE3) other than nom-de-marque.  Couldn’t find any sequence data for BL21D3 at Genbank but did find entries for BL21DE3.  Would be interesting to know if there are any significant differences other than source.

Probably a typo but further in the writing they mention DH10b.
So who knows what actual strain of E. coli they are using.
