Hey Mega/Andreas,

I am near Stanford :-) This is a noncredit course and Stanford does not offer any formal acknowledgement of it towards a degree or other program. Your institution probably doesn't either. It's meant for people who want to educate themselves without the cost and structure of a formal program (Udacity and Coursera are similar offerings).

These online programs are increasingly viewed as legitimate (you definitely see them on people's CVs) but they are an alternative to, not a part of, a traditional degree.

Hope this is helpful!

Is that what you're looking for, Mega?

Hi, wondering if here is someone in/near Stanford.

There's this course where you are taught the basics of tech enterpreneurship... However, am tied to my University in Europe due to lab exercises. There may be the possibility that if Stanford aknowledges this course and gives credits/ETCS then I could do it instead of the lab exercises.

But there's not really much information givven on this, nor a contact adress. So I called at the secretary, was forwarded two times, then spoke with someone at the undergrad submission department... She said, I have to be an official Stanford student to participate - however not sure if she confused this course with a full undergrad study program. " This is the 7th offering of the class. In total nearly 200,000 students from around the world have participated and worked in teams together in this class. "

Maybe someone here knows more?

Thanks a lot Mark!!!
Does that mean there is no chance of StanU signing a paper saying "he participated sucessfully in the course" and my University giving me credits/ECTS for it?

Frankly, I'd rather be there in person than online, because you meet great guys that may want to work with you on the idea. Where else to look for enterpreneurial skilled people?

Isn't CA pushing for MOOCs to be accredited within the state?

Yes, there are certainly many accredited online courses - Berkeley famously has an entire masters degree in data science at the eye-watering price of $60,000, and some high schools have switched their math curriculum to Kahn Academy.   So yes there are accredited online courses,  but this is just not one of them.

Personally/IMHO, I think if what you are after is learning entrepreneurship, accreditation is not useful - by definition. You need academic credentials to get hired somewhere, but if you are your own boss, the only thing that matters is what and whom you know. Successful entrepreneurs are super-scrappy/frugal and don't pay retail :-)

Stanford will give you a "certificate of completion" but I seriously doubt your institution would recognize it. There is a market for courses you take because you are merely curious, and this is it.

That doesn't mean it's not valuable! I have grown more than one multimillion dollar business based on stuff I learned through nonaccredited education. So I highly, highly recommend it.

Alright, thanks a lot!
PlanB is I do the online course, but I have the strong feeling that the networking there is at least as important as the information provided?

There's really not a lot of networking in MOOCs in my experience (despite what they might claim).

Assuming you want to start a business in bio, I'd recommend www.synbiobeta.com events as an excellent starting point for your network. Good luck!
