I'm curious what the caveats will be. I'm sure there will be something similar to having a sponsoring professor. A sponsoring local lab perhaps? Some sort of CYA policy.

Hi guys,

I could discuss extensively with Randy at SB6, several points:

- yes it is true and confirmed, 2014 will be the year non academic teams will be able to register to IGEM. 

- you don't need to be affiliated to any university so yes you can apply alone and by yourself

- the fees will remain the same so several thousands dollars for registration + jamboree participation fees per team members. 

- a DIYbio team will have to answer a certain biosafety standard (I.e. GMO Licence in Europe) that will be controlled by a committee. No clear detail how this will be implemented. 

Personal remark: Except DIYbio groups in the US that don't require a GMO license and are close to Boston, I don't see how worth it is to a group of biohackers to invest literally 10000 to 20000 dollars on registration + trip + accommodation fees to participate to the competition. If you're able to get that much money use it for science and projects... If you really want to participate to iGEM, just join or collaborate with an already existing academic team that will pay for your fees.

As there is no difference of treatment between traditional and non-academic teams, the registry will be distributed to all registrants yes :)

not actually show up to the competition judging? (saving all the costs
associated with the more social aspects of iGem)

The lessons would take place in my basement, but I need a S1 certification first. Am working on that. It's quite easy to meet the technical requirements in my country, but there needs to be an ''operator'' and a comissioner of biological security and a deputy of the comissioner.

So I asked at the ministery, that it is not written that I can't be operator and comissioner at the same time. They said this is true, but the comissioner has to consult the operator, and I couldn't consult myself... But the operator is the one in charge, so I'll find someone to do the comissioner job. For small labs the operator can be the deputy of comissioner, so both may be me

Having a comunity team would be awesome, but even just getting access to those parts would be great. Indiegogo to get the parts could have merit...
