Hi All,

Just wondering if you had any thoughts on where we go from here for Crowdfunded Citizen science?

All the best,
Ryan

I don't get it.. how is it DIY if you are venture backed?

I'd say it's not - but Ryan's article is about crowdfunding, not VC funding.

I don't think we necessarily need to find a clear dividing line, but DIY to me seems to imply something you're doing in your spare time, not as a full-time job.

Is it still DIY if your kickstarter made enough money to devote yourself to your project for a year? How is a DIY project with half a million in Kickstarter funding different from a startup with half a million in angel investment? Meh - either way, I wouldn't mind claiming it as a success story that came out of the DIY movement. Does it really matter what we call it?

Hey Bryan,

As Patrik pointed out, it's actually about crowdfunding (not venture funding), none of those start ups that I wrote about were initially venture funded, they were funded by people like us interested in crowdfunded science (just as as side disclaimer I backed all three with a donation as I want to help foster further growth in crowdfunded science).

Additionally, it's all DIY as the groups doing it are doing it themselves and outside of academia and a classical corporate structure (although I'm assuming they eventually incorporate to functionally operate). So any thoughts on what's next?

Best,
R
