Deadline for proposals to participate: 10am, Mon 4 April 2011
Synthesis will be a 6-day intensive exchange laboratory for artists, designers, synthetic biologists, engineers, and others from relevant disciplines, collaboratively exploring synthetic biology's ideas and techniques and its social and cultural implications.
The exchange laboratory will be devised and led by scientists including Prof John Ward (UCL) in collaboration with artist/designers Oron Catts (SymbioticA UWA/Royal College of Art) and Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg (Synthetic Aesthetics). Synthesis is organised by The Arts Catalyst with UCL and Synthetic Aesthetics. The exchange process is intended to explore and challenge the notions of synthetic biology, the level of control and manipulation of living systems, the application of engineering logic, and the social and cultural dimensions of synthetic biology; with the hope to inspire proposals for future projects from all participants.

The Arts Catalyst, 50-54 Clerkenwell Road, London EC1M 5PS *
James Acord, the “nuclear sculptor”, passed away on the 8 January 2011. The Arts Catalyst worked closely with Acord over many years. We invite you to join us at this event to remember and celebrate his life and work.
Acord was the only private individual in the world licensed to own and handle radioactive materials. He is likely to remain so since the authorities closed the loopholes after he achieved his license. His life became a 20-year cat and mouse game with the nuclear regulatory authorities, in which he pursued his dream of sculpting with nucleear materials. Along the way, he created sculpture and events that probed the history of nuclear engineering, often incorporating radioactive materials. Acord's astonishing story shines light on the secrecy and security with which society cloaks the nuclear industry.
The evening will include an exhibit of Acord's work, stories of his work, film clips, photos, and a reading from 'The Book of Ash', a novel based on Acord's life, by the author James Flint. James Acord was a master storyteller, and we will also have an 'open mic' session and invite your memories and stories!
We expect this free event will be popular, so please
* ACCESS: The event will be held on the first floor at The Arts Catalyst. Unfortunately, there is no lift. Please contact The Arts Catalyst to discuss any specific access needs. The event will be live streamed.

Our monthly intergalactic gathering brings you:
Agnes Meyer-Brandis' lecture performance on art, science and weightlessness. Her starting point is an artistic project, entitled Cloud-Core-Scanner, conducted under weightless conditionswith the DLR (German Aerospace Centre) in which she explores the boundaries separating fact and fiction, fantasy and technology.
We Colonised the Moon (Hagen Betzwieser and Sue Corke), who explore an idiosyncratic world view based on popular science, flexible wikipedia knowledge, graphical illustrations and various display formates. Hagen Betzwieser will talk about his experience in The Institute of General Theory and Sue Corke will describe their projects Moon Scratch and Sniff and Lost in Space.
In a 1:1 performative encounter, 'Tinned Fingers take you into space', Tinned Fingers provide a short encounter for audience members - one at a time - that combines film, music and performance to give an experience of space travel in DIY style.
KOSMICA is a free event, but space is limited, so please
The event will be live streamed.
Each month KOSMICA will bring together the cosmically curious and culturally quirky space community for a social mix of art–space programmes. The series is programmed by Nahum Mantra and the next KOSMICA will take place on Yuri's Night, Tuesday 12 April 2011.
