The presentation over in London went well.

The talk was impressively great. Thanks Sara and Bugs -- this was the
best event of any kind I've attended in a while. I hope the video
recording
turns out well; ustream didn't work I think.

It conveyed the excitement of this new DIY biology frontier, and
highlighted that the London Hackspace has all the knowledge/resources
to start making interesting things. It was also a great introduction
to the mechanics of genetics, and the tools researchers use. (Many of
them are quite simple in principle.)

Doing any of this will require patience though -- lots of basic things
aren't there yet. DIY bio is still a very young field.

Random links from the talk:
http://bioweathermap.org/ -- collaborative project that maps
geographic & temporal distributions of microbial life
http://biocurious.org/ "the community lab for citizen science"
http://groups.google.com/group/diybio-london local interest group (now
dormant)

Several of the projects mentioned used Kickstarter for initial
funding. (They're often based in California.) Bio weather map uses
Instructables to explain how to make your own measurements.

I'm glad people enjoyed it - laptop issues aside, it was good fun for
me too and the disucssion afterward was great.

I mentioned that someone in my lab is working on making mutants of
fluorescent proteins, trying to shift the frequencies of the light
they absorb/emit to make them more useful for imaging technologies. A
slightly scaled-down version of this might make an interesting medium-
term project for the group... it'd involve some playing with bacteria
and DNA extraction (easy), a reaction similar to PCR (but I don't
think we need the thermal cycler; I need to check details), and
growing the bacteria on plates. For the analysis, we need to precisely
measure the colour of bacterial colonies growing on a plate... maybe
build a lightbox, take photos under standardised conditions and find
or write some code to analyse the colours in the images?

When I get a chance -- probably this weekend -- I'll have a proper
think about it and put some notes up on the wiki. I'll stick my slides
up as well.

Have fun,
Bugs

I've been contacted by a guy from Nature, working on an article about
biohacking. He's very keen to speak to someone tomorrow (Friday) who's
involved with the hobby/scene/whatever. If this is you, let me know
and I'll pass him your contact details (or vice versa)

Email below:
Dear Bugs,

My name is Geoff Marsh and I am a reporter at Nature. I am doing an
interview with Heidi Ledford for the Nature podcast about her opinion
piece on DIYBio. I would like to also meet someone in London (where I
am based) today or tomorrow, who actually does DIYBio, preferably in
their garage/lab. Would you know anyone suitable for this? If so it
would be great to have their contact details, telephone if possible as
my deadline is looming.

Many thanks,
Geoff Marsh
