Hey folks-

I was talking with Oliver from Genspace, and they also run a journal club.  We are tossing around the idea of holding joint journal clubs. We should be able to make this happen through skype, zoomus or googlehangout.  I think this is a great opportunity to share information and potentially start some collaborations.  You never know, it could lead to a community lab wide journal club, which would be wonderful!

We have not worked out the details yet, but I think it would be nice to have alternating sessions. Currently IdeaLab is every other Sunday from 5-7pm, but maybe we can find a time that works well for both spaces.

What I need from the IdeaLabbers is a consensus as to what days and times are best. There are not many open evenings according to the BioC schedule, so we could either 1. keep Sunday if that works with Genspace, 2.  move it to Tues at 7pm after Molec Bio of the Cell study group, or 3. hold during the day (BioC schedule wide open).

Oliver, what days and times work best for Genspace?

Look forward to making this happen.
Thanks.
Nina

Sounds fantastic! Either Sunday or Tuesday night are fine on my end.
East coast/west coast time zone seems potentially problematic, that
probably speaks to keeping it sunday so that the impact of starting
early is lessened.

Thanks Derek. When I mentioned Tues, I did not take the time difference into account - 7pm is definitely too late for Genspace. So it looks like Sunday early or late afternoon is still the optimal timeslot?

Sunday never works for me, so I would prefer Tuesday - maybe 6pm / 9PM EST?

Either Sunday or Tuesday would work. However, Tuesday at 5:30 is the Bioreactor meeting so that would be a conflict.
So, Sunday may be the best time.  Zoom seemed to work well at the last IdeaLab.

If we hold journal club at 5:30 or 6pm, we could do Sunday, Thursday (until Bioprinter which starts at 7:30pm), or Monday (until Biolum meetup at 7:30pm).

I have no problem moving our session to a week night to include more people from BioC and our future Genspace collaborators :)
Tues or Thurs evening 5:30PST/8:30EST or 6pmPST/9pmEST?

Hi All,

We have ours scheduled at 7pm EST on Thursdays here at Genspace. every two weeks. The next one is due the Thursday following this week, since we just had our most recent journal club.

People are generally pretty flexible here ragarding days. I'd have to look at the calender regarding weekends since that's when we usually have a lot of classes booked.

People here generally have the lost time available time late in the evenings. Early in the day folks tend to have too many commitments like work.

Can sometime like starting 5pm or 6pm your time work on a given weekday?

I think a joint journal club is a great idea.  Both Tues and Thurs work for me.  I look forward to it.

Either Tues or Thurs at 530 or 6 is great on my end too.

Okay great! I suggest, if okay with Oliver and the folks at Genspace, we officially move our IdeaLab to align with theirs (we will just have to slightly adjust the time to 5:30pmPST/8:30pmEST - or 6pm/9pm). How about we cancel our Sunday class, and the next IdeaLab will be one week from today. I believe that is when Genspace's next journal club is scheduled.

We used zoom.us last time, and that seemed to work extremely well. I believe we can also screen share through that application as well https://www.zoom.us/feature.  So we should do a test run sometime this week to make sure we can connect to Genspace through zoom.us and vice versa.  Jay - maybe you can coordinate that if you have time?

Let's join Genspace's next week and host 3 weeks from now.
Oliver, what do you think?

So Thursday before BioPrinter? That would be perfect! Are you planning to keep ours every week, or switch to every other week to match Genspace?

Yes before BioPrinter!  So glad you will finally be able to join in :) Actually, IdeaLab is every other week, so we will not be changing the frequency.

Unfortunately, I will most likely not be able to get down to BioC on Thurs nights at that time. So I will be using zoom.us as well to connect. I think that should work fine though.

Hello all-

IdeaLab is officially every other Thursday, for an excellent reason! We are now running a joint journal club with Genspace in New York. This is very exciting and hopefully will lead to many collaborations. We are going to hold our class at 5:30pmPST/8:30pmEST, and connect via zoom.us, which we will try out in the coming days.

Our first joint IdeaLab will be this coming Thursday, the 8th, at 5:30pm. Genspace will be leading the class.  Then we will lead the following. I am really looking forward to this and hope you can all participate. Please send me an email if you think you will want to participate via zoom.us (similar to skype/googlehangout).

Thanks!
