Hey folks!

We are having a DIYBIO meeting this coming Sunday, at 6:00 PM at Bosslab/Sprout.  If you have a cool project, idea, or you just want to check out what is going on, come on by!

Anyone know an inexpensive or donation source for S. cervisiae strain Y-55 or β-glucuronidase/arylsulfatase?

Thanks,
Ian

Hello all,
It was awesome meeting everyone and hearing what everyone is up to! This is my email introducing myself in order to get help on finding bioluminescent, fluorescent, or just an easy source of a strain of bacteria to work with for prototyping.

Yoav is helping me with the pen-plotter streaking florescent bacteria onto agar mural project. He's doing most of the mechanical/electrical/software and I'll be focused on the microbiology parts (split based on which we are more familiar with relative to each other).

For tinkering with wireless sensors, have you guys seen jeenode? It's a pretty cool board. http://jeelabs.com/products/jeenode

I'm working on learning about low-cost low-power wireless things as a project with friends over iap. Our v0.1 board looks like this:
and accepts both sparkfun and the generic mdfly/iteadstudio/ebay nordic nrf24l01+ breakouts, w/ 3v battery cell holder (and two pins for running it off a wall power supply). Essentially, it's a development board with (female headers for 2.4ghz breakout) + (cr2032 battery holder) + (atmega328) + (some flash memory IC) + (breakouts for connecting resistor-type sensors). This currently talks to a computer usb port via the nordic serial breakout board from sparkfun.
Still trying to figure where we want to go with this project, so the input was definitely helpful. In the near future (next week), we want ours sensors to talk to an IOIO board talking to android phone which then (over wifi) talks to the internet. In the future (over spring term), I want to work with bluetooth chips like the bluetooth 4.0 nordic chips. If anyone wants to chat about wireless sensors, I'd be interested.

Thanks all,

Hi Nancy,

I haven't been to a meeting yet, planning on going this Sunday, but
I'm really interested in this bioluminescence project that you're
working on.
So, I'm not actually a biologist. I have no biology skills whatsoever.
I'm a visual media artist, and I came across DIYBIO a while back and I
thought it was a great concept. I love the DIY science movement. And
your project in particular interests me, espcially since you're
working it into some type of installation. I would love to hear more
about it, and possibly help you out if you need any assistance. Will
you be at the meeting on Sunday?

Cheers!

Hello!
Rachel is working on a dinoflagellate installation, is much more likely to finish an installation, actually knows biology, and is actually a core member of the group ^^

I just wander by daydreaming occasionally. I wasn't planning on coming in Sunday, but I might.

My biology knowledge is from 3 to 4 years ago, aka infinity time ago in the field of biology. (I'm not studying biology in school).  For dipping into microbiology, I've run across http://www.biobuilder.org/ (yay flash animation?) or directly http://openwetware.org/wiki/BioBuilding:_Synthetic_Biology_for_Students, or
http://openwetware.org/wiki/20.20(S12) (intro to synbio). Back in the day (?lol) I really liked http://www.dnalc.org/resources/animations/

For general accessible awesomeness I recommend
http://scienceblogs.com/

And speaking of visualizations, I always liked the Inner Life of the Cell animation (the music is awesome):
... not sure if the copy on there is legit, I originally watched it here:

What do other people read/recommend?

Whoa they have a voiceover explanation version for the Inner Life vid!
--Nancy, going to back to work for real now so I have a chance of making it there Sunday
