Hi Alan:

Since you've mentioned resources a couple of times... :)

I hope you've taken a look at

http://p2pu.org/node/5571/document/5634

and especially at the link

http://wiki.planetmath.org/AsteroidMeta/Surveying_the_Math_Metacommons

contained therein. You may also want to add a link to your
guide to web resources on the p2pu diy math resources page --
I believe you have permission to do that, so if you wish, please
go ahead...!

Personally I always found some of the books in the Schuams
Outline series helpful (or at least reassuring):

cf. http://www.mhprofessional.com/category/?cat=4234

tho of course they don't match the criterion of being "web
resources" (at least, not yet).

My sense is that many folks in this course may be wondering
*where to begin* -- and one known-to-be effective technique is
to "Begin with the End in Mind". Do you have any guides to
common reasons "why people study mathematics"? If so, it
might give some inspiration to folks looking for direction.

I noticed that PlanetMath doesn't seem to be included...

So to try it out, I submitted a short review of PlanetMath.

Already running into one UI issue, which is that the buttons that
pop up additional windows are a bit of a pain. It would be nicer
(in fact, in my view, really nice!) to include the same functionality
within the same page.

(Actually it would be great if we could integrate this review tool
with PlanetMath sometime!)

Another long-term issue: since resources change, it would be
good to be able to log in and see "my reviews" and to be able
to update them.

One question: are multiple reviews per resource permitted?

I think I might have broken the site though, please check!

http://qpr.ca/math/resources/doResults.php?topicID=51&topicLongName=

is now empty...

The first link still has a list of resources but the second one is
doesn't, just has the title. Also are they supposed to be hyperlinks?
because they are not, its just a plain text list.

Hope the second set of eyes helps, let me know if there is anything
else I can do.

Thanks Guys, I am now looking into this. In both cases just headings
are showing up (the second case is a narrower topic so doesn't have
subtopics) but for some reason the actual items aren't getting listed
even though they are still in the database. Sorry I didn't get to it
sooner but I didn't check in on this course yet today and hadn't had
any other feedback about the problem.
cheers,
Alan

I seem to have it working again now. Seems to be some issue with how
the php file was handling import_request_variables (perhaps due to a
change in server configuration). Thanks for the other feedback as
well, and I'll look forward to following up on that as we go on.
cheers,
Alan

Thank you. This is exactly the kind of thing I am looking for.
People to add reviews of either their own material, or new stuff they
have found, or stuff that is already in the database; and then to give
feedback on the experience.

The goal is to associate each resource with as finely defined a topic
as can be found to cover the whole resource, so your choice for
planetmath as a whole is right on. With regard to multiple reviews, it
would certainly be appropriate to link any sub-pages to their
corresponding sub-topics, but not to associate a whole project like
planetmath with individual topics. Also a single resource may well
fit under more than one topic (eg a simulation of population growth
might show up under applications and also, depending on the math level
used, under exponential functions and/or differential equations).
Multiple reviews by the same person of the same resource under the
same topic would probably be discounted though, unless a good reason
for them was provided.

I do have pages written which provide for viewing and updating
previously written reviews, but I would prefer to fine tune the basic
setup and interface before opening those up for consideration.

With regard to interface, you are right that pop-ups may not be the
best way of presenting supplementary information. What you are seeing
now is a pretty-well "bare bones" implementation and once I have the
logic and structure right (assuming that seems worth the effort) then
I would also want to do a lot to improve the aesthetics and other
aspects of the user experience. So I *am* looking to hear about such
things but may not get to them right away.
