Here are no less than 13 wonderful definitions:

1 a ravine carved by a glacial river.

2 a faint discoloration in fabric or stone, typically appearing over time in areas subject to
repetitive use.

3 a loose garment made of a long strip of cloth wrapped around the body that is worn by men
and women chiefly of the Malay Archipelago and the Pacific islands.

4 an isolated mountain with twin peaks.

5 the nest of a squirrel.

6 a pavement, or stepping stones [Welsh].

7 short for sar'n, a colloquial form of sergeant from informal military speech.

8 (especially in Scotland) a steep-sided hollow at the head of a valley or on a mountainside;
a cirque.

9 1. sb. a coarse sieve used to winnow corn.
2. v. to sift corn through a sieve.

10 a low, steady, background sound present in a quiet landscape, such as wind through grass or
distant water, noticed only when one pauses to listen.

11 a path through a wild place, often rocky and difficult to traverse.

12 a wooden toy whistle.

13 split in two, divided.

Please vote on the group for your favourite two of them, by replying to this message.

The deadline is 9 am GMT (0900 UTC) on Sunday 9th November. My computer says that is 4 am in New
York, 1 am in Los Angeles, 11 pm in Paris, and 10 pm the Same day in Wellington, New Zealand.

That deadline is longer than I'd normally choose, but any reasonable time on Saturday would be
rather short. However, as is usual, I reserve the right to close voting when all who submitted
definitions have voted, and will hope to be able to do so by 2200 UTC on Saturday.

Full rules, if you're curious, are at www.dixonary.net.

Best wishes, Tim B

I'll vote for the popular 1 and 8:

> 1 a ravine carved by a glacial river.
