We have 13 definitions for our word SPITCHCOCK, 12 from your vivid imaginations and one from a dictionary.

Please vote for two before the deadline, which is just over 36 hours from now - I'll close voting early if everyone who has submitted a def has voted.

1.       Gibberish; doubletalk.

2.       A two-hole dunny or outhouse.

3.       A fine-toothed blade used for scoring leather.

4.       One who speaks in a halting manner; stutterer.

5.       A haystack with a thatched covering for protection from rain.

6.       A faucet that, when open, can direct liquid to any of several outlets.

7.       A loaded die; a playing-card that has been tampered with; to cheat at dice or cards.

8.       A type of latch used in early railway compartments to secure overhead storage bins.

9.       An eel cut into short pieces, dressed with bread-crumbs and chopped herbs, and broiled or fried.

10.   One of a number of valves in the bilges of a naval vessel which allow the ship to be scuttled by flooding, to avoid it falling into the hands of an enemy.

11.   Food that produces an unpleasant physical reaction for some people while being popular for others; durian fruit is an example.

12.   The valve that controls the water level in a toilet tank with a float ball, which rises as the water level increases; the valve shuts off the water supply when the tank is full.

13.   To force numerical values into fewer bits by storing only significant digits and recalculating dropped bits when needed. [1960s computing slang: < split chock (to wedge), influenced by early memory conservation techniques]

Quite a group of definitions!

I'll take these today as being the least likely:

5.       A haystack with a thatched covering for protection from rain.
and
7.       A loaded die; a playing-card that has been tampered with; to cheat at dice or cards.

Since two separate conversations today involved loaded dice and coverings from the rain, I'm obligated to vote for 5 and 7

Rey isn't the last, and I don't feel the least bit guilty because the deadline is still nine hours away,

3 and 7, please.

By the way, cilantro is another example of #11. From 4% to 14% of people have a variation in the OR6A2 gene that makes cilantro taste like soap. The percentage depends on ancestry: those of European ancestry are at the high end; those descended from Asian, African, and other non-European groups are at the lower end. I don't think durian really fits, though. Its problem is that it tastes good while stinking to high heaven for anyone in the vicinity who is not also eating it. Both those reactions are, AFAIK, universal or nearly so.
