Hi all,

On top of everything else, I've been under the weather and simply forgot to post the definitions before now. But the list of 14 defs for greisen is finally here, after all the trouble with this deal. I'm sure you'll be really happy when it's over. So will I! Fingers crossed that the trouble is at an end, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Please vote for two. The deadline for this is what I think is a much more reasonable midnight GMT on Monday April 27 which is 7pm CDT Monday for me. If everyone has voted, I will close early with relief.

Nancy

Hi Nancy,

Here are the votes of the Dutch jury:

7. A coarse, herb‑infused seasoning crumble of dried rye and toasted seeds, used to add depth and texture to roasted vegetables or hearty stews.

9. [ON] to grind; ground millet.

Cheers,
Hugo

And, if I have guessed correctly, so far, for the Dutch entry: nul points.

Unless I'm misunderstanding your comment, Hugo voted for 7 and 9.

The rock is attractive, 1 and 12:

If I haven't already voted (I thought I voted but I don't see votes from me in this message thread), here are my votes:

2. [Obs.] A thin woolen fabric.

3. Layered industrial residue, sometimes repurposed as a decorative or artistic material.

Yes, you have completely misunderstood.

Hugo's was a Eurovision joke (because it's Eurovision season, not that Americans can be expected to know that) and my point was that the Dutch entry, that is to say his def (my guess, of course), had had no votes.

For which nul points is another Eurovision joke, particularly in English-language contexts, because the UK frequently ends bottom of the log at Eurovision, and when Hugo and I were young, Eurovision voting was audio-only, and almost exclusively in French.

Thanks for the explanation (although I did have to look up "Eurovision")!

Yes, that is what I meant. Points for those two definitions.

think Paul guessed that so far, nobody had voted for my definition yet. Whether he was right is something I will not reveal at this time.

Cheers,
Hugo -- who probably should refrain from Euro-centric jokes in this company.

5 & 10. One because it is similar to a definition I toyed with, and the other because it isn't.

5. An old person.

If this is in time, I'll take 4 and 7.

Hugo, I did guess that. And was spectacularly wrong. Congratulations on topping the votes. In my book, coming second, but only because of losing out to a correct guess, really does make you the “real winner”.

All three of my authorship guesses in this round were wrong, so I clearly was not on form.

And as for Eurocentric jokes: at least Johnny and the two Tims will understand them. To me, nearly all the NADs involve mystifying cultural references, so why not?

But it didn't matter anyhow, other than affecting the scores of two people who were far from being in the running anyhow. No worries!
